If there is one thing that 2020 taught me, it is that I can replicate anything with a little creativity. I was craving a little pampering session, so with everything locked down I decided to design my own DIY spa day.
My whole DIY spa day setup came together in about 5 minutes. I decided on a Saturday afternoon that I was due for some pampering and a few minutes later I was ready to go, as I used what products I already had on hand. Chances are – you probably also already own the major necessities to make an at-home spa session come to life.
I decided that my nails & my face was long overdue for some loving, so my at-home spa focused on nails & face care, as well overall relaxation. You may you are craving a different kind of spa session, so whatever that is for you, go for it!
Here I will walk you through how to treat yourself to an easy and relaxing DIY at-home spa session.
Step 1: Set the Spa Scene
Whenever you think about a spa, what comes to mind first?
The serenity, most likely.
The environment is what makes a spa so relaxing and so appealing. There is always calm music playing, the room is nice and warm, it is clean and it just smells like relaxation.
The first step to a successful DIY spa day is to mimic serenity. It will immediately feel like you are entering an oasis when it is just your own bathroom. By adjusting your bathroom setup from what you are normally used to, psychologically your brain is triggered to think and feel differently.
This is how you can make your own DIY spa day oasis:
- Turn the heat up in your soon-to-be spa area (most likely your bathroom).
- Bring in some greenery and flowers that normally don’t make an appearance in your bathroom.
- Spray a nice room mist or light a nice candle.
- Roll your towels and arrange them nicely.
- Find a gentle, soothing playlist on Spotify.
- Put on a nice robe & some warm slippers.
Step 2: Gather Your Products
Before you begin your at-home spa session, decide what it is you are craving or in need of. Is it some nail love? Some face love? Hair love? All the above?
For my at home spa session, I was craving some face and nail love.
This is what I used for my at-home spa session. You can use it as some inspiration to help you decide to use:
FACE:
Face Mask from Spacemasks
Pore Stripes from Biore (the OG of stripes – can’t go wrong)
Wash Cloth
NAILS & HANDS:
Cuticle Oil from OPI
Nail Polish (OPI Funny Bunny has been my ultimate fav for years. I also really like Bubble Bath. Side note – how do you get the job naming OPI colors?!)
Hand Balm
BATH:
Bath Crystals
If you are in need of some hair love inspiration, you can find some recommendations here, as I don’t have any first hand experience or recommendations for a good hair mask or conditioning treatment.
Once you have all of the products you want to use, arrange them nicely, as they would at the spa. It’s all part of the oasis!
Step 3: Start the Pampering
Now that the room is ready to go, it is time to pamper.
Using the products I listed above, for my face, I followed these steps:
- Place a warm facecloth on your face, holding for at least 5 minutes. This helps open your pores. You might need to reheat the cloth with fresh warm water every now and then to keep it warm.
- If you are using a nose stripe, apply this next and wait the recommended time. The warm face cloth is in preparation for the stripe, to allow it to work better.
- Cleanse your skin thoroughly with your facial cleanser.
- Then apply your facemask. Once you remove the face mask, don’t forget to gently massage all remaining moisture into your skin – definitely do not wipe this off!
If you are applying both a pore stripe & a face mask, there will be waiting time for both, so it is the perfect chance to start your at home mani/pedi.
For my nails, I gave myself an at-home manicure & pedicure, which I have been doing for years. If you need some guidance, you can use this guide for inspiration.
Step 4: Relax & Enjoy
The at-home spa session doesn’t just end yet, the final step is to just enjoy it. It is as simple as that!
Perhaps draw a warm bath or grab a book and bask in the oasis you have created while you wait for your face mask to finish or for your nails to dry.
I am quite grateful for 2020 teaching me that with a little creativity, I can pretty much replicate anything I would typically go out and pay for. This DIY spa day has been a go to for me every now and then becuase we all deserve a little R&R.
You can execute this on a one-off basis or make it a weekly routine.
A DIY spa day also makes a great gift for a mom, sister or friend who could use a little pampering themselves. You can gather up all the products for them and deliver it to them as a DIY at-home spa gift box.
